As a small business owner you may have asked yourself, “why does my website need to look good on all devices?” You may have heard the term ‘responsive design’.
What the heck is that? It sounds fancy and techy. “I don’t have time to look into that, I just want my site to look good, give my customers the information they need, and be easy to use.”
One thing is for certain, you’re right, your website needs to be easy to use and making sure it is responsive is one way to accomplish that.
WHAT IS RESPONSIVE DESIGN?
First, let’s get straight what Responsive Design is. According to Google, Responsive web design “responds to the needs of the users and the devices they’re using” and “the layout changes based on the size and capabilities of the device.”
In other words, the website adapts and adjusts so that it looks good on any screen size.
Outside of the obvious reason of your site being usable and looking great everywhere, let me explain some other reasons that might not immediately come to mind.
A PROPERLY DESIGNED WEBSITE CREATES TRUST
When you are at a restaurant and the menu is difficult to read, you may get frustrated and even decide to leave. The same thing happens with a website, users who can’t easily use, read, or interact with your site will be much more inclined to just leave and find another option.
Tyton Media put out some website statistics and claimed that, “38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content/layout is unattractive.” This same report claimed, “94% of people cited web design as the reason they mistrusted or rejected a website.”
On top of that, Google is constantly adapting its search engine optimization standards and they now consider the responsiveness of websites when ranking.
SAVE TIME AND MONEY
In the past, website owners would need two different websites. One that works on desktop or bigger screens and a second that works on mobile screens.
That means paying to have two websites built or spending at least double the amount of time to create your own. Now, you can have your website designed and built so that the layout adapts and changes to the screen size it is displayed on.
You can also have different content be displayed on different screen sizes. In other words, the content of the website can be created to be different on a desktop versus a phone, all in one website not two.
YOUR SITE COULD LOOK DISTORTED
If your website is only designed for larger screens and someone tries to view your site on a smaller screen, the images, text and other content could be drastically distorted and look horribly wrong.
The layout could look way off, images might not line up how they should, the text could be massive, the user might be required to scroll and zoom in or out. These are all user experiences that you want to avoid like the plague.
Ensuring that your website looks great on all screens is paramount, responsive design takes care of that for you.
SO HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR WEBSITE IS RESPONSIVE?
First, you can pull out your phone and visit your website in your browser and see how it looks. If it is easy to use and looks how you planned, then you’re all set. Another way is to visit this tooland enter your website url.
